John Fitzgerald Kennedy: Requiem
Lyric Symphony in Song - William Maselli
Orchestral Extracts

This recording of instrumental extracts from The John F Kennedy Requiem was undertaken almost immediately after the vocal version was completed in 1996, and was completed in 1997. Nothing additional was recorded. The pieces were simply mixed without voice and piano, creating another world entirely. It is not universally satisfactory, nor are the digital sounds and performances a desirable substitution for superbly performed acoustic renditions. This reality is accentuated by the composer’s inexperience with this milieu at that time. Nevertheless, these versions of the Requiem are often striking --- subterranean primordial rumblings encapsulating grief, despair, and exhilaration. They create a moment in time. Whether they possess long-term value must be judged by history.
